In January 1998, Michael Patt relocated to Dayton, Ohio in order to pursue an MBA at the University of Dayton. Coming from a wrestling background, Patt began looking for a Judo and/or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) school in the greater Dayton area. At the same time, by chance, Jorge Gurgel moved to the Dayton Area to begin his Bachelor’s degree at Wright State University.
Unable to find a Judo and/or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school, Patt began training at Aegis Progressive Martial Arts in Huber Heights. There he started his training in Muay Thai Kickboxing and traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu under Jose Conners. Later Patt continued his Muay Thai training under Oscar Kallet.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Southwest Ohio was born when, by accident, a Dayton martial art school owner, Jeff Brown, was eating at a local Centerville, Ohio restaurant. Brown struck up a conversation with his waiter (Jorge Gurgel). After discovering Gurgel knew BJJ, Brown expressed an interest in having BJJ taught at his school. Gurgel began teaching classes in the fall of 1998 at the Brown Institute of Martial Arts. Jose Conners, who is a friend of Jeff Brown, told Patt of the new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructor at Brown’s school. Patt went down to try class and has been with Team Jorge Gurgel every since.
After several years, Gurgel gained many students from both Dayton and Cincinnati, when in 2001, he decided to expand and open his own school in Middletown, Ohio. With Gurgel leaving Dayton, there was no full-time certified BJJ Instructor in the Dayton area until the spring of 2004 when Patt began teaching BJJ at his original school, Aegis Progressive Martial Arts, in Huber Heights. Later that year, Patt was offered ownership of Beavercreek Thai Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu from his friend and Muay Thai Instructor Oscar Kallet. On October 1st, 2004, Beavercreek Thai Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu became Beavercreek Martial Arts. This was the first time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was taught full time by a certified BJJ instructor since Gurgel moved to Middletown, Ohio. In 2007, Jorge Gurgel moved his school from Middletown to Cincinnati, Ohio. Leaving Patt as the only certified Jorge Gurgel BJJ school between Dayton and Cincinnati.
Michael Patt is the highest ranking BJJ instructor and practitioner in the Greater Dayton Area where he oversees the training, progress, development, and expansion of BJJ in the Greater Dayton / Miami Valley Area for Team Jorge Gurgel.
